As we embark on this Resurrection Season, we are reminded of the significance of the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Just as the crowds welcomed him with shouts of praise and adoration, may we also open our hearts to receive him with joy and reverence.
Matthew chapter 21:1-11
“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.’ This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: ‘Say to Daughter Zion, “See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”‘ The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’ The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’
This passage captures the excitement and celebration surrounding Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. The people recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah, welcoming him with shouts of praise and adoration. This event marks the beginning of Holy Week and sets the stage for the ultimate sacrifice and triumph of Jesus’ resurrection.
The image of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a humble donkey serves as a powerful reminder of his humility and peace. Help us, Lord, to follow his example and embrace humility in our own lives, seeking peace and unity with those around us.
As we reflect on the events of that day, may we be filled with gratitude for the salvation that Jesus brought to the world. Let us not take for granted the sacrifice he made for us on the cross, but instead, let us draw near to him with thanksgiving and praise.
As we journey through this week, may our hearts be stirred with anticipation and excitement for the resurrection of our Lord. May we prepare ourselves spiritually to fully embrace the message of love and redemption that Jesus offers to all who believe in him.
May we, like the crowds who spread palm branches before Jesus, be bold in spreading the message of his love and salvation to those around us. Help us to be a light in the darkness, pointing others towards the hope and grace found in Christ.
We pray that you will take this week and spend it in a time of deep reflection, transformation, and renewal in our faith. May we draw closer to you, Lord, and may our lives be a reflection of your love and mercy.
In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
